The Book of Jared

The greatest blessing...

The greatest blessing...

While reading the Book of Mormon the other day, I came across a passage that really hit home for me...

In the 16th chapter of 1st Nephi, Nephi, after explaining things to his brothers (yet again!) says something that I have noticed before, but which really hit home this time.

7 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, took one of the daughters of Ishmael to wife; and also, my brethren took of the daughters of Ishmael to wife; and also Zoram took the eldest daughter of Ishmael to wife.

8 And thus my father had fulfilled all the commandments of the Lord which had been given unto him. And also, I, Nephi, had been blessed of the Lord exceedingly.

The last part of verse 8 really touched me, because in my mind, he is not talking about having left Jerusalem, or having to travel back to get the brass plates, nor having to kill Laban in the process. He is saying that in spite of all the difficult things he has had to to, taking one of the daughters of Ishmael to wife was being blessed of the Lord exceedingly. I love that sentiment!

I have an amazing wife, who I met when I was 16 years old. We got engaged 2 years later and then spent 3 1/2 years apart while I was in training for the National Guard and we were on our missions. She served in Uruguay, Montevideo, and I served in Spain, Barcelona. We were married in October 1992, and have had as wonderfully crazy a married life as was our courtship and engagement. Looking back, I can honestly say, with Nephi, that I have been "blessed of the Lord exceedingly."
